Change or clean your furnace filter

Tips to improve your home and lower your energy bill

Benefits

  • Spend less time waiting for your room to warm up
  • Save 4 percent to 6 percent on heating costs
  • Improve air quality

What you need

Damp paper towel or cloth
or
A new furnace filter that matches the correct size for your furnace

what to do

Clean - Turn your furnace or air-conditioner unit to the “off” position. Take the cover off your furnace filter. Use a damp paper towel or cloth to clean off the built-up dust and dirt. Put the cover back in its place and then turn the unit back on.

Replace - If you choose to purchase a new one, be sure to match the correct size for your furnace. Turn your furnace or air-conditioner unit to the “off” position. Open the furnace or air conditioning unit. Look for an indication on the side of the filter for the direction of air circulation. If it was correctly installed, you can see which way the filter needs to be facing by looking at the old filter when you pull out it. Insert the new air filter. Close the furnace or air conditioning unit and turn the unit back on.
