Lighting retrofits can provide energy savings greater than 40 percent while improving the quality of the lighting. These quality improvements include quiet operation, improved color rendering, and a reduction in HVAC costs due to less heat being generated by the lighting system. Fluorescent tube lamps are by far the most common lighting fixture in commercial buildings and many use older T-12 lamps that use considerably more energy than new high-efficient T-8 and T-5 lamps.

what to do

For a quick return on your investment, replacing T-12 lamps and ballasts with T-lamps and high efficiency electronic ballasts is the smart choice. This is also a simple upgrade because the T-8 lamps and ballasts fit into the same fixture.
T-5 lamps are a further 12 percent more efficient than T-8 lights, but are also a bit more expensive. If you are willing to make a long-term investment in lighting, T-5 lamps will likely be your most cost-effective choice.
