what to do

Most clothes washers provide a choice of temperatures for both the rinse and wash cycles. No matter how dirty the clothes, there is little reason to ever use hot or warm water for the rinse cycle. For the wash cycle, you can use cold water in most cases, or warm water for very dirty loads. You should use a hot wash cycle for only the toughest cleaning jobs.

Almost all the energy it takes wash clothes is from using hot water, and the energy required to heat it. By washing clothes in cold water, you can get them just as clean at a fraction of the cost. Your clothes will also last longer and maintain more vibrant colors.
